Spring Clean & De-Cluttering || The Kitchen

My first post in the series will be centred around deep cleaning & De-Cluttering the kitchen.

In my opinion, cleaning the kitchen is the worst room to tackle in my house. We are constantly cooking, we have cats and our storage is filled to capacity, it's just a bloody nightmare! But when it's had a real deep clean and all the cupboards have been organised, it has a lovely sense of calm to it and deserves it's title as 'Heart of the home'.

Cupboards

Unless you are one of these people that have a Bill Bryson outlook on things and must use up every last scraping from a bottle or packet before you buy another, then like me, your cupboards will be filled with out of date food, an excessive amount of beans and 50 bottles of piri piri sauce ( slight exageration there ). Although it feels good knowing i have well stocked cupboards, it's a bloody nightmare trying to find what i'm looking for most of the time so when it gets to this stage you have to have a clear out.

1. Start with one cupboard at a time and remove absolutely everything

2. Check the use by date on each item

3. Throw away all out of date food and anything you know you will never eat ( including that no fat,no wheat,no dairy, no fun shite you bought for the diet you never even started )

Now you will have empty cupboards, a massive dint in your stores and about 15 bin bags full of old food. Brilliant. So now you need to clean the buggers. Kitchen cupboards can be notorious for harbouring bad smells but they are so easy to clean. All you'll need is...

1. Bucket of hot soapy water
2. Micro Fibre Cloths
3. Dry towel of any kind
4. Old Toothbrush ( These are sooooo useful! )
5. Sugar soap

Firstly, wipe out any crumbs/debris that has gathered on the shelf part of the cupboard. You can use the toothbrush to get into the little nooks and crannys. Next, dip a cloth into the water and ring out well and get wiping ( don't forget the inner walls and the inside of the door ). When you're happy you've cleaned it thoroughly, dry it off with the towel. If you leave it wet, it will leave a horrible fusty smell and also can cause damp which is never good around food. Finally, add some sugar soap to the cloth and wipe the outer door. Sugar soap is used to remove grease and in a kitchen, you're guaranteed to get cooking residue all over cupboard doors.

Now you have thoroughly cleaned the cupboards, you can start to put everything back in. If you are OCD like me, you can organise them accordingly such as one shelf for tins, another for packets etc.

Cutlery tray/draw

One of the more easy jobs in the kitchen but still bloody necessary. Remove all the cutlery and put the tray into the sink and completely submerge it in hot soapy water ( add sugar soap if greasy or particulary dirty ). Clean thoroughly and dry. It's such an easy job but one that gets over looked so often and it's well worth doing.

The Bread Bin

Exactly the same principle as the cutlery draw. Remove the contents, remove crumbs and wipe with hot soapy water but i MUST MUST MUST insist that you really go mad with drying it. If you leave a bread bin with any moisture, it will penetrate the bread very quickly and mould will quickly set in, not only in the food, but in the interior and that will ruin anything else you put in there.

Extras

1. To clean your dishwasher, fill a mug half way with white vinegar and put on the top rack then throw the remainder of the vinegar into the basin at the bottom. Put on a hot wash and you dishwasher will be grease free.

2. To clean the microwave easily, cut 3 slices of lemon and place in a bowl of water. Put the bowl in the microwave and turn on for 4 minutes. When done, remove bowl and the inside will be really easy to wipe clean.

3. To descale the kettle, pour in some white vinegar or a calgon tablet and boil away. When boiled, tip it out and repeat as many times as necessary. A descaled kettle works so much better and takes less time to boil so you're saving money too technically.

Now you have those jobs out of the way you can concentrate on completely bottoming the kitchen. Everyone has their own way of cleaning their kitchen but here are some tips that i use...

1. Dry wipe the surfaces first to remove any crumbs

2. Don't clean the sink first, you need it for all your other jobs

3. Pour some neat bleach down any plug holes, bleach smells better than rotting food and stale water

4. Sweep the floor first and then hoover it just to be sure you have all the bits before you mop

So that's my post on the kitchen. Next up will be the bedroom....don't get kinky you dirty buggers!

Spring Clean & De-Cluttering Intro

I HATE CLEANING!

Ok i don't actually hate it, but it's definitely not a priority i relish having on my list but unfortunately because men are so incapable of even putting their dirty washing in the basket ( i'm looking at you Carl ), we have no choice but to blitz the house every week otherwise we end up in a shit tip.

Now even though i don't particularly like or enjoy cleaning, i do love a spring clean and a de-clutter of the house. There's something so satisfying about taking the time to completely bottom your living space and organise everything aswell as chucking out the old and (hopefully) replacing it with the new.

I don't profess to being the be all and end all of knowledge when it comes to the subject but seeing as part of my job involves cleaning and i have been the main cleaner of my house for many a year i like to think that i know a thing or two and that's why i decided to do a series of blog posts about Spring Cleaning & De-Cluttering. I'll be giving step by step guides to cleaning, organising, tackling specific rooms and everything else related over the next couple of weeks so hopefully someone will get some good use out of the posts and enjoy being in a nice clutter free and sparkling clean living environment :)

Iphone Photo Album - February Edition

February is nearly over so it's time for me to do the February edition of the Iphone Photo Album. I was a little worried when i uploaded the photo's because most of them are completely random and i had to ask myself why i was inclined to take a picture of a smelly candle?! All will be revealed...

Awww. The top 2 are from when me and Carl went our for Valentines. Bottom left we have a photo of me in a mask and 3 pairs of gloves when i had to disinfect an entire police station because of a swine flu outbreak ( risky job i have ) and bottom right we have me wearing Carl's lounge pants.....before i bought him these for Christmas, he was always wearing mine so this was payback.

Interesting. Top left is a screenshot of words that can be made out of the word 'crayon' which i needed to pass English on the game 'Bully:Scholarship Edition' ( i'm very sad ). Top right is a lady on Twitter who i REALLY need to contact about doing some artwork for my YT channel. Bottom left is a news article and it's about the crime scene i had to clean up recently...a very sad story :( And bottom right is an interesting little thing i found about the best areas of your body to spray perfume so it lasts all day.

Haha ok top left is something i saw on a news article. They are candles that have supposed 'man scents' in them like petrol, bacon & money?! It made me laugh. Top right speaks for itself. Bottom left is something i found in Sainsburys that got me VERY excited but i didn't buy one...why?! And finally bottom right is something i picked up at Morrisons. I'm not a massive fresh fruit juice fan but this tastes amazing. It's so refreshing and helped cure my cold.

Top 2 photos are from when i made a friendship bracelet for my daughter Sarah. The little wheel makes the job sooo much easier than pinning 8 pieces of cotton to your trousers. Bottom left is my candle of the moment and it's the Candy Cane candle from BombCosmetics. It smells of raspberry ripple icecream mmmm. Bottom right is from when i went on a mission and cleaned all my make up brushes. May seem weird using hand wash but it really works!

HAHAHAHA! Oh god, like January, there had to be some screenshots from when me & Carl trawl the internet for funny pictures. ' I am Bourbon Freeman ' is my favourite because he's an absolute legend and the fact someone turned him into one of my favourite biscuits makes this picture even more amazing. The same goes for the Nicolas Cage one bottom right, this slogan has now been added to mine and Carl's dialect dictionary. The other 2 photo's are of a Llama & an Alpaca. Since i explained to Carl what an Alpaca was, he has got this vision in his head of owning one, saddling it up and riding it and the idea pleases him so much. Anything Alpaca or Llama related and we are howling with laughter.

Top left is what Carl text me when he was at a fishing tackle show over the weekend. He was surrounded by loads of new fishing stuff and famous anglers and he got rather excited. Top right is a funny emblem i found on COD ( someone has way too much time on their hands to draw Herbert from scratch ). Bottom left is an ITV news van that was outside a police station i was working at, never did find out why it was there and bottom right is my cat Maria hugging my hand...she freaked out when i tried to take it back.

Yum Yum Yum!!!!!!!

What's in my everyday make up bag?

After enduring the most boring year of my life doing beauty therapy at college, you would've thought i had learnt some pretty valuable lessons when it came to make up. Well i haven't and until a week ago, i put all the make up i had into the amazing make up case my mum got me and continuously rummaged through the eye liners and primers until i could find what i was looking for. This has now become a pain in the arse when i'm in a rush and need to get some war paint on so i invested in a make up bag to carry around my absolute essentials make up wise and frankly i'm surprised how long it's taken me to do this because it's the most sensible and practical thing i have ever done with regards to organisation. * Round of applause *.

So to add to my post about what is in my wash bag, here's a little rummage through my everyday make up bag! ( I obviously have brushes too but there's no point showing them on here duh! )

As much as i hate following a crowd, i have to admit that the Naked Palette's from Urban Decay are the best thing since sliced bread when it comes to eyeshadows. As you can see i have the Naked Basics which is a brilliant little set that can be used daily and Carl bought me the Naked 2 palette for Christmas and i've fallen in love with it. I didn't really like the original palette and i haven't seen the Naked 3 yet so for now i'm more than happy with these.

Here we have a MAC eyeliner, Rimmel Scandaleyes liner pen, my trusty Collection 2000 kohl eye pencil, Eyelash curlers, L'Oreal Collection Privee lipstick, Benefit Pore fessional primer & the Maybelline colossal volume mascara. All of these items are what i go to everytime when i do my make up and i love them all though i'm still in 2 minds how i feel about the Benefit Pore Fessional.

The 2 items at the top are from a company called Sheercover. Sheercover is a mineral make up that is absolutely brilliant if you have problem skin like i do ( mine is very dry and i have break outs ). Liquid foundation and dry skin don't mix and make the finish very patchy and sort of half arsed but this mineral make up gives me a flawless finish and it's so ridiculously easy to apply, i'll never use anything else. And underneath is my Collection 2000 Mosaic Glow Bronzer which makes me look like i've just come back from holiday..if only it were true!

And finally i have my HD brows palette. I use this palette religiously because i am a victim of over plucking and i need all the help i can get when it comes to bringing my eyebrows back. Because i have black hair ( not natural ), i use the 'Vamp' palette which works with my skin tone and hair colour perfectly and i don't end up with those god awful scouse brows. Costly but so worth it.

What's in my washbag?

Oh my god it feels good to be properly back to writing up blog posts again. Things have been extremely frantic one way or another with Valentines, work, having a really nasty head cold ( which i'm still nursing ) and our Sarah being on half term but i'm now back in top form woohoo!

Because life has been pretty manic for the past couple of weeks, i've really struggled with inspiration for blog posts. I haven't been able to buy anything to review because with bills and a holiday to pay for, the money doesn't stretch very far but it came to me when i was getting washed the other day that i would do a what's in my washbag post and then do another post on my make up bag. Everyone loves a good nosey through your stuff don't they.

So this is my washbag and i absolutely love it. My best friend Shell bought me this for my birthday last year so i'm afraid i can't tell you where it's from ( sorry ). I love the whole postage theme around it, like it's a big brown parcel. So sweet.

And here is what's inside it....

First up is the oral side of cleanliness if you will. I've always used Dentyl Active mouthwash because due to the kanker sores i suffer with, most mouthwashes really irritate them but this is really gentle and you can see the crap it pulls away from the teeth when you spit it out which is immensely satisfying.

As greatful as i am that i don't have oily skin, i'm kinda pissed that i have extremely dry skin as do all of my family so i have had to moisturise my skin pretty much all my life. I have always used the Vaseline brand moisturiser and i was thrilled when i came across this spray version. One thing i hate is when you have moisturiser all over your hands and it goes all over the bottle eeewww but this takes that problem away nicely. An essential item for me.

2 very important pieces in my wash bag. Firstly is ' The Ultimelt ' deep purifying hot cloth cleanser from Soap & Glory. This stuff is amazing, it's like having a steam facial at a spa. You basically rub it all over the face and then wipe it away with a hot flannel or with the included muslin cloth. It leaves my face feeling invigorated and is a god send in the colder months. Next is Puffy Eye Attack tired boost hydragel from Soap & Glory. I always have bags under my eyes and constantly look tired so i apply this gel in the morning and before bed under my eyes and it takes away the puffiness for an instant awake look.

This Clean & Clear exfoliating daily wash is like an old friend to me. I've been using this product since i was a teenager so well over 10 years now and i'm 100% loyal to it. With my dry skin, i get an excessive amount of skin build up on my face and i need something that i can exfoliate with to renew and remove the dead skin cells and this is it. It's cheap, it smells nice and it does the job. Simple as that.

My final products are the more gentle side of my wash bag. Firstly is the L'Oreal Miceller solution ( I did a blog post on this here ) and the Nivea cleansing mousse. After i've used the exfoliator, i need something gentle to use afterwards to calm my skin down and this stuff is amazing for that. It's so gentle and feels great on my face.

What are your washbag favourites?

Our Valentines Day 2014

So Valentines Day has reached us yet again and it's just as soppy as it's ever been. This was mine & Carl's second Valentines together and we agreed that we would just get a card for each other and go out for the night. I guess i didn't get the memo....

Yesterday morning before he went to work, Carl told me to look in the wardrobe & when i did i found this. He did an excellent job of making out like he had forgotten to get me a card so well done for that Carl but i had to giggle when i saw the little note he left, it just stank of smugness. Anyway i was thrilled he remembered and i love my presents.

Once he got home from work, we hopped into the car and drove into town to stay at the new Premier Inn. Ok so it's hardly a boutique hotel in the centre of Paris but really, who cares?! We left Sarah with my mum at home and we set about letting off some steam. ( The hotel is really nice, like surprisingly nice considering it was so cheap )

We had already decided weeks ago that we would go to Nandos for Valentines and we were really surprised to see that the place was pretty quiet considering you usually queue out the door. We were surrounded by so many couples it was kind of amusing. Anyway, we demolished some amazing food ( no surprise there ) I went for medium, i wasn't feeling very hardcore but Carl was and he ended up with his nose running for the next hour!

With our belly's full, we somehow managed to walk over to old town for some alcohol. While Carl opted for a double vodka redbull ( that was more like paint stripper and limeade ) i went a little 'Sex & The City ' and ordered a Cosmopolitan. At this bar, they faf about making the cocktails infront of you which back in my teens was very exciting but now at the tender age of 27, i just wanted him to get the f*@k on with it.

I'm not a fan of gambling but i've got to hand it to my better half for being a whiz on a bandit. Carl plonked himself infront of 4 bandits last night and won on each one amounting to a total of around £60 so when you weigh it up, it covered the cost of Nandos and all the drinks + taxis. I'll never be an advocate for gambling but the boy did good...he always does.

What night out isn't complete without a kebab. Nandos is all well and good but when you have one and then sink a ships worth of alcohol and walk in a head on gale force wind you soon feel the need to eat again so it was doner meat and chips all round. We jumped into a black cab and went back to the hotel to eat it in bed and watch Family Guy...Carl fell asleep soon after.

Yet another great Valentines in the bag though admittedly i'm absolutely nackered now because i don't sleep well as it is but when i am in a foreign environment i tend to wake up alot through the night wondering where the hell i am so i will def sleep well tonight to make up for it.

Hope you all had a great Valentines Day too.

I have seen tags like these for a very long time and i knew that one day i would end up doing one myself. Well, i've been back into blogging for 4 months now so i think now is a good a time as any. Valentines Series 2014 - A ' Not On The High Street ' Valentines

The final installment of my Valentine Series for this year is my favourite. If it wasn't already clear, i'm not what you would call ' traditional' when it comes to gifts, i prefer the more out there, out of the box kind of presents. I like gifts that have a personal touch to them, where some thought has been put into it. The idea of getting a present that a million other people have doesn't exactly excite me so that is why i have gone onto one of my favourite websites and put together a little collection from their Valentines range that i think would make amazing presents with that little personal touch.

Our Date Jar - £13.95
Personalised mens leather date bracelet - £42

This is too cute for words and i'm actually ordering one for mine and Carls room. If you can't see what words are there, it says ' How long will i love you, as long as stars above you & longer if i may ' which i believe are lyrics from Ellie Goulding- You can also have it personalised with yours and you partners names along the bottom and a little tree etching too.

These little cakes in a tin are a different take on sending a Valentines card & if you're anything like Carl who 'doesn't do cards' but does enjoy baked treats then this is the alternative for you. All you have to do is take off the lid, add water and bake! A really sweet ( get it? ) idea i think.

Yep jewelery has wangled it's way into a post once again, i like the stuff i can't help it! So anyway, this is an interlocking necklace that you can have personalised with 2 names and a date. I admit that some personalised jewelery can be awfully tacky but this is simple and pretty and that's why i like it. It's not a huge neon sign around your neck saying ' I LOVE SO AND SO YES THAT'S RIGHT I REALLY DO ', it's what seems to be a pretty necklace from afar but on closer inspection it's a little reminder of the year you got together..though why a woman would need reminding i don't know but it's lovely all the same.

Again, this is a personalised gift but from a different perspective. This framed print is like a little story of your relationship. It starts with your names and how/where you met. It then goes on to moving in together, marriage, kids etc basically whatever your please. I would say that this is more for a couple that have been together quite a while as it does detail alot of milestones in a relationship but i really love the style of it, it reminds me of an old theatre poster.

One thing i notice alot is people have about 100 keyrings for 1 key, is it really necessary? I know better than most how annoying it is to loose your keys but seriously, 100 keyrings? NO !! Go and buy this one instead and make sure it's the only one. Ok so the saying is a little cheesy but everything love related generally is and instead of seeing it as a vomit inducing way of showing your other half how you feel, see it as a solution to spending an hour rooting through the never ending teddy and eiffel tower keyrings looking for your door key.

This is a really cute little idea and one you could easily make at home ( but i like this one so nur nur ). What you do, is fill out the little cards with different date ideas such as cinema, ice skating, meal out etc, stick them in the jar then when you decide you have a free night to do something together, you dip into the jar and do whatever is on the first card that comes to hand. And for all the people out there who prefers getting up to no good, you can put that down on the cards too. Filth !!

A personalised bracelet for the man in your life. A bit like one of the I.D bands you get in hospital only a lot more upmarket and nicer. You can print whatever message you like and also it is versatile with regards to who you give it as a gift to. Not only could you give it to your partner but maybe your dad on his birthday or your best man? Love things with different uses.

All the above gifts can be purchased from www.notonthehighstreet.com

So that's it for this years Valentines series. Hope you all have a good un
